Ironically Drew Gomber, an established Western historian, was born out east, and in of all places, right in New York City. Though an Easterner by birth, he became infected with the Western "bug" at a very early age. Growing up in New Jersey in the 1950s, Drew was exposed to the era of the television Western and Drew developed a profound interest, not so much in these mythic celluloid characters, but in the real people these actors represented.
After High School and a spot in college, Drew joined the military and served for four years, traveling to many ports of call around the world. Following his honorable
Discharge in 1972, he chose Florida as his next home where he lived for four years
before relocating to Boston, to study guitar.

Three years in Boston was enough to perfect his chops on the six-string and Drew returned to Florida, where he established himself as a working musician and had a successful stint in the newspaper industry. But twelve years playing and working in Margaritaville was enough for Drew and it was then that he decided to move to New Mexico to pursue his true passion …Western History. Drew has been a New Mexico resident since 1994.
Currently, Drew calls Historic Lincoln, New Mexico his home as he has for the past nine years. The entire downtown main street area of Lincoln is on the National Historic Register and the town is well storied with tales of the “real” Old West. The Chisum Trail, Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County Wars of the late 1800’s all center around this once booming County Seat. And, history still lives in Lincoln today, so there are few places better for a man with Drew’s interests to call home.
Drew is the author of Past Tense, Part I and Heroes and Villains of the Lincoln County War, both of which are collections of his weekly newspaper column in the Ruidoso News. He has also authored A Primer to the Lincoln County War, a small volume designed to help the novice understand the complexities of the characters, the politics and the timeline of the Lincoln County War and the story of its most famous participant, Billy the Kid.

Drew's interest in the American West does not begin nor end with New Mexico, however. He also writes and lectures regularly about All of the outlaws and lawmen who lived out the lives in the Reconstruction West, be it Wyatt Earp in Arizona or Butch Cassidy in Wyoming. Drew has appeared regularly on the History Channel, most notably the most successful series in that channel's own history: "Wild West Tech," as well as numerous other shows. He has worked for A&E, Biography, the BBC, and is currently working on his third special for The Discovery Channel.
Like the frontiersman buried deep in his soul, Drew lives alone in Lincoln – well almost. He does keep company and maintains regular dialogue with a horse, two goats, a cat, and two dogs. Lazarus, the wolf who took up residence with Drew in 1994, died in 2004. This friend of Drew’s is the subject of a long story Drew wrote called "Father Sun, Mother Moon, Brother Wolf." The great grey predator is also the star, along with Drew, of a commercially produced video. Of the video, Drew says, "Its great! You can watch me do stupid, dangerous things with one of the mightiest predators who ever walked the American continent. I should have had my head examined!"
This video and accompanying story are available for purchase, along with all of
Drew's books and CDs.
